The NACDS Foundation offers this exciting opportunity for a pharmacy student to enhance their understanding of how a public foundation can support programs that can enhance patient care in community pharmacy. Among key areas of focus will be community pharmacy and patient care issues, and the ability of community pharmacy to positively impact patient care in the health care system.
The NACDS Foundation Summer Internship is an 8-10 week summer program available to any pharmacy student who will have completed at least one professional year of pharmacy school before the internship begins. The internship typically begins in June and ends in August, depending on the applicant's academic schedule. One student is selected for the internship each summer, which is held at NACDS Foundation headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia.
Educational Outcome:
Upon completion of the internship, the intern will be able to demonstrate a greater understanding of how the NACDS Foundation fulfills its mission of supporting programs that enhance patient care in community pharmacy, key community pharmacy and patient care issues, as well as a strong understanding of the ability of community pharmacy to positively impact patient care in the health care system.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the NACDS Foundation Internship Program, the intern will be better able to:
- Describe the mission, goals and objectives, organizational structure, programs and services of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation and how they assist community pharmacy in enhancing patient care.
- Identify, understand, and explain the highest priority issues facing community pharmacy and the patients they serve.
- Utilize effective oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrate the ability to serve as a project manager, managing key projects as assigned and keeping appropriate stakeholders apprised of status.
- Build, plan, and execute an effective education and/or training program consistent with the Foundation’s educational goals.
- Develop marketing programs and strategies for Foundation seminars, publications, events, and other programs as needed.
- Explain the importance of NACDS Foundation research, education, charitable programs and other patient care initiatives.
- Describe the systems and procedures involved in the day-to-day operations of the NACDS Foundation and other foundations.
- Explain and understand the importance of building and maintaining relationships.
- Explore new ways to improve the Foundation website’s outreach to donors and the general public.
- Demonstrate the ability to speak effectively and represent the Foundation in external meetings and forums.
- Demonstrate the ability to take initiative, use creative thinking skills to solve problems, and manage and prioritize multiple projects.
- Demonstrate leadership skills in the Foundation setting as a future leader in patient care initiatives in community pharmacy.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Applicants must be enrolled full-time in an accredited U.S. school or college of pharmacy
- Applicants must be in good academic standing
- Applicants must have completed at least one professional year of a doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) program before the internship begins
- Applicants must have community pharmacy experience

Applications must be postmarked by February 12, 2010 for consider for the 2010 NACDS Foundation Summer Internship.
NACDS Foundation representatives will review applications and interview potential candidates in person or via telephone.
A stipend (taxable) will be offered to the student. Transportation, housing, and all other costs of living are the responsibility of the student.
