Pharmacy Student Scholarship Program

Scholarships for Tomorrow's Chain Pharmacy Leaders

The goal of the NACDS Foundation Pharmacy Student Scholarship Program is to support the development of future leaders in chain community pharmacy and to recognize pharmacy students who have a strong interest in pursuing a career in chain community pharmacy.

The NACDS Foundation Pharmacy Student Scholarship Program also awards named scholarships recognizing gifts made to this fund by organizations or individuals to support educational development. The Robert J. Bolger Scholarship, Taro Research Foundation Scholarship, Edmond Fougera Scholarship, and Leonard J. DeMino Pharmacy Student Scholarship were created as part of the NACDS Foundation Pharmacy Student Scholarship Program to support pharmacy student scholarships. Exceptional students of the highest achievement will receive named scholarships.

In 2009, 93 pharmacy students--increased from 85 in 2008--were awarded scholarships. For a list of the 2009 scholarship recipients, click here.

Scholarship Awards: Eighty-five (85) $2,000 scholarships were awarded in 2009. In addition, eight (8) select recipients received named scholarships in the amounts of $2,500, $3,000, or $5,000.

Eligibility:

  • The student applicant must be enrolled as a full-time pharmacy student attendinng a U.S. college or school of pharmacy studying to obtain a doctor of pharmacy degree (Pharm.D.).
  • Student applicants must have completed at least one professional year of pharmacy school to apply. First year pharmacy students are not eligible to apply.
  • The student applicant must have experience in chain community pharmacy, as well as the desire to pursue a career in chain community pharmacy. Experience may be current or recent employment in a chain community pharmacy. A chain community pharmacy is defined as a community retail pharmacy company operating four or more pharmacies.
  • The student applicant must have a minimum "C" grade point average.
  • Previous NACDS Foundation Pharmacy Student Scholarship recipients are not eligible to apply; however, previous applicants are welcome to reapply.
  • Family members of the NACDS Foundation Board of Directors or Officers are not eligible to apply.

Information on the 2010 scholarships will be available in August.

Named Scholarship Opportunities

The NACDS Foundation Pharmacy Student Scholarship Program offers named scholarships recognizing gifts from organizations or individuals to support the educational development of future pharmacy leaders.

The NACDS Foundation is honored to recognize Robert J. Bolger through the named Robert J. Bolger Scholarship established by a generous gift from Barr Laboratories, Inc. in 2002. Robert Bolger served for 25 years as President of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores. He served on the Barr Laboratories Board of Directors from 1988-2002. Robert Bolger’s devotion to our industry and his untiring efforts to promote both the pharmacy profession and the value of pharmaceuticals is legendary.

The NACDS Foundation is pleased to recognize the Taro Research Foundation through the named Taro Research Foundation Scholarship established in 2003. The Taro Research Foundation is a private foundation whose main purpose is to support public charitable organizations that conduct medical research, facilitate medical education, or provide assistance to persons who are afflicted with medical disorders. The Taro Research Foundation supports the NACDS Foundation’s goal of developing future leaders in the chain community pharmacy industry.

The NACDS Foundation is honored to recognize Len DeMino through the named Leonard J. DeMino Pharmacy Student Scholarship established in 2009 to advance pharmacy education and the profession of pharmacy. Len DeMino joined the National Association of Chain Drug Stores staff in 1989 after a 33 year career at People’s Drug Stores, and was honored by his peers in 1988 by being awarded the NACDS Harold W. Pratt Award. During Len’s career, he gave back to his profession with a record of industry service and engagement in numerous leadership positions and active participation in national, state, educational and pharmaceutical organizations. The NACDS Foundation created this scholarship on Len’s behalf upon his retirement in 2009.

The NACDS Foundation is delighted to recognize Fougera through the named Edmond Fougera Scholarship, established through a generous grant to maintain financial assistance for scholarships to students in schools of pharmacy. Edmond Fugera began a retail pharmacy in 1849 and soon after expanded the business and began manufacturing his own pharmaceuticals under the name E. Fougera & Co. The scholarship supports the NACDS Foundation’s goal of developing future leaders in chain community pharmacy.
